Alderman Lisle Baker announced his candidacy for re-election as the Ward Alderman for Ward 7 hosted at a kick-off party hosted by Ward 7 residents Michael and Debbie Slater at their home on Cotton Street on Sunday afternoon, May 3. Baker is completing his 13th term, and currently serves as president of the Board. Alderman Baker, a law professor at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, said, "I hope to continue to work with citizens and colleagues to preserve and enhance the community we share." In his introductory remarks, Mr. Slater praised Alderman Baker as working "as hard, selflessly and with as great a love for our City as anyone I know,' and concluded 'in this year where everything is changing...we especially need to retain experienced leadership to help maintain and enhance our community. That's why it's important that Lisle be returned to the Board of Alderman as our Alderman. Newton needs him, especially now." (See the full text of Michael's introduction, which opens a new window.) Board of Alderman President and Ward 7 Alderman Lisle Baker will hold informal office hours at Newton City Hall on Tuesday, June 23, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., in Room 222. During the office hours, Newton citizens are welcome to offer their ideas in person, or to seek help with a specific problem. If you have questions, please contact Lisle at AldermanBaker@comcast.net
The President presides over Board meetings, appoints Committees and their chairs, and serves as Acting Mayor when the Mayor is away from the City. Alderman Lisle Baker was chosen to be the President of the Board for the 2008-09 term, having been previously chosen as President for the previous 2004-05 and 2006-07 terms of the Board of Aldermen. For the 2008-09 term, Alderman Scott Lennon was also elected Vice-president, and Former Aldermanic President Verne Vance, was also re-elected President Emeritus. The Vice-President and President Emeritus, in that order, preside over the Board if the President is for some reason not available.
